When should I clean my dog's infected ear before medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 13 years and 4 months old | 15.6 lbs

Hi, my dog has an ear infection in one ear and I have medication for him but his ear was so full of gunk I didn't think the medication could get in his ear, so I cleaned it with a cleaning solution from the pet store and then later applied the meds. Is that ok? Should I clean it out every day? Or should I not be cleaning it before the medication? Thanks

You can even clean the ear every day, but ALWAYS apply the drops half an hour to one hour after you apply the cleaning solution, otherwise you will dilute the medication reducing its effectiveness. Remember to dry up the ear after applying the cleaning solution.
