My dog has lumps, bald patches, and scabs. Is it fleas or mange?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 100 lbs

My dog has small lumps under the skin on his neck that seem to be dispersist to other areas causing small round bald patches with scabs in them. It's as though something is biting him.

Poor Ginge! It is possible that he has an allergy to fleas, ringworm or mange causing his skin lesions. These lesions can become infected if he is scratching himself. Make sure that Ginge is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative, such as Nexgard, Bravecto or K9 Advantix II regularly. You can also try bathing him in either a gentle oatmeal-based dog shampoo or medicated antiseptic shampoo (drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=27982) to determine if there is any improvement in his skin. If these lesions continue or worsen, Ginge will need to go to his vet for further evaluation. I hope this helps and that all goes well! Please excuse the double answer.
