Why is my dog scratching his ears until they bleed and scab?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 75 lbs

My old English Bulldog scratched the top of his ears open. His ears are clean to the eye. I have non- scented wipes that I use with oatmeal in it and they are for sensitive skin. I do use the ear wash once a month too and still he scratches!!! It is so bad they are bleeding and the scabs are dime size. I cleaned the wound and still he keeps at it. He has no hair in the area too and I am afraid he will no longer grow hair there and it will never heal. We also have given him Benadryl to help.

Because it is localized to the one spot than you can alternate neosporin with cortisone cream to help keep it clean and take away some of the itching. It does not appear scarred so hair should regrow when it heals. If it doesn't improve in the next day or so your vet can prescribe oral medication to help with the itching and infection
