My dog licks and nibbles the comforter at night. Why and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

Our dog was rescued 10 day ago and I've noticed that at night when she goes to bed (she sleeps with our son or my husband and I) she either constantly licks the comforter or nibbles on the comforter. And even with redirection she will stop but start right back up again!

Some dogs do like to nibble, lick, or suck on fabric as a self-soothing behavior - similar to a human toddler sucking her thumb. It's not likely that you will be able to make her stop doing this, so if it bothers you, I would recommend having her sleep in a dog bed or a crate in your bedroom with her own blanket. That way, she can lick and nibble as much as she wants to without disturbing you :)
