Should I take my dog with a liver shunt to the vet for not eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 20 lbs

My dog is 2yrs old w/ non surgical liver shunt. Lately he is slowing down & not eating good w/ his low protein diet. I cut up some apples & mix with it & eat it but if apple is gone, he is through eating too. He likes treat of strawberry, watermelon & all berries. Do you think I should take him to the Vet? How cute is Asroc. I would recommend taking him to the vet because he might need additional medication to help him with the shunt. Their are some medications that can be given to help improve quality of life with a shunt. You could try adding in sweet potatoes into his food with some veggies like peas and green beans. These are low in protein but can increase a patients interest in food.
