Why is my dog's skin gray around a healing hot spot? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | unspayed

my dog had a hot spot with an open wound. we shaved away the hair and disinfected the area often. time has passed and the area is still healing, but i just noticed yesterday that the skin around the skin had turned gray. so their is a gray ring round the scab and a ring of pink around the gray. what does gray skin mean? is that a normal part of the healing process?

There will be areas around the wound where the skin will die off, then new skin cells will move in. The grey is likely dying skin whilst the red is the new healthy skin. If the wound looks particularly red, or is smelly or pussy it would be necessary to visit the vet as antibiotics will be needed.
