My dog is afraid to come inside after a fire. What can I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Flat-Coated Retriever | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 45 lbs

Recently I have been having trouble getting my dog to come back inside the apartment. Over the weekend there was a small fire in the oven that set off the smoke detector and clouded up the apartment and I think that may have something to do with her sudden behavior change. I will get to within the corner of the building and she will freeze and refuse to move closer. This morning she laid down and I had to carry her back inside. What can I do to help her be more comfortable coming inside again?

Poor Luna! I'm sorry to hear that she has been so anxious since the fire this weekend. Try to determine what may be a high-value reward to her, be it a special treat or toy and try to use this object to coax her inside. A calming pheromone collar (here is one example: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/adaptil-adjustable-calming-dog-collar) can be helpful in some stressful situations. Ultimately, time, patience and rewarding positive behavior (i.e. she walked closer to the door today than she did yesterday) will be the best way to slowly remedy this situation. If she seems anxious inside of the house or is still having issues coming through the door in a few weeks, it may be worth discussing anxiety medications with Luna's vet. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
