Is my puppy's vaccination schedule and cost normal or too much?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | 1 year and 7 months old | 14 lbs

What is an accurate vaccination schedule for puppies that my mini schnauzer pregnant with? The veterinarian down the road said that they have to come in every two weeks for a new vaccine, they said that they charge 125 to 150 per puppy and that seems a bit extreme to me. Is that an accurate vaccination recommendations? It just seems way too often and very expensive. I want to make sure that I'm not being taken advantage of and every vaccine there's a risk of an allergic reaction.

Hi. Great questions. Puppies should begin vaccines at 8 weeks old. Then they need vaccines every 3-4 weeks until the puppy is 16-18 weeks. It is then once a year after that. They do need a physical exam with every shot, they need a fecal rest in the first visit, and to start heartworm prevention. I would not be surprised that it does get close to 100 dollars a visit during these boosters. The positive thing is its only once a year after that :) I don't think you are being taken advantage of. Just know that none of us go in to this field to take advantage of clients. I hope that helps. And if you do feel it's too expensive, you can shop around. The negative to remember one that is you get what you pay for, and you have to go to someone you like. Congrats on puppies!

I typically recommend a vaccine schedule of three series of vaccines given four weeks apart starting at 6-8 weeks of age. This will be the DHPPi combination shot. The second series is given at 10-12 weeks of age, and the last series is given at 14-16 weeks of age. The rabies vaccine should be given separately starting at 12-14 weeks of age, and booster of that should be given four weeks after the first. As for the cost you were quoted, prices do vary by location and clinics within a specific location. I suggest called around other clinics to get an idea of their pricing. I can also put a link below that will show you if there are any low cost clinics in your area. I hope this helps :-) http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962
