My dog has brown liquid poop, shivering, and lethargy. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Max just went "poop" again but the only thing that came out was a gooey liquid substance with a tint of brown. He went to his bed and lasted down after that. He has been shivering and shaking also.

By your description, it was likely mucus. This happens during times of GI stress or inflammation. Try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with one tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as your dog not vomiting. Feed until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. See your veterinarian if symptoms persist, worsen or if your dog begins vomiting or has diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

The signs you describe could be caused by a variety of problems that range from a minor issue to something serious. The best way you may help her is to take her to a veterinarian for a physical examination and to discuss the problems she is having
