My dog has brown liquid poop, shivering, and lethargy. What's wrong?

Max just went "poop" again but the only thing that came out was a gooey liquid substance with a tint of brown. He went to his bed and lasted down after that. He has been shivering and shaking also.

By your description, it was likely mucus. This happens during times of GI stress or inflammation. Try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with one tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as your dog not vomiting. Feed until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. See your veterinarian if symptoms persist, worsen or if your dog begins vomiting or has diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

It sounds like your dog is very uncomfortable or even painful, probably in his belly from your description of his symptoms. The diarrhea could be caused by any number of things; intestinal parasites, a bacterial infection, even being constipated will sometimes manifest as diarrhea because liquid feces is all that will get by the impacted fecal material. It could be as simple as a dietary indiscretion, meaning he might have gotten into the trash and eaten something that didn't agree with him. If he continues to have loose stool, or starts vomiting, loses his appetite, acts lethargic, and/or develops a fever, get him in to be seen by your vet right away as this could indicate a more serious problem.

Blood can be found in stool from inflammation in the colon that can happen with episodes of diarrhea. There are several possible causes of diarrhea including food intolerance, parasites, viral or bacterial infection, and stress. If diarrhea continues, I recommend taking a sample of the stool to your veterinarian to have them check for parasites. For the next day or two, you can try feeding white rice and boiled chicken to see if this helps to resolve the diarrhea. A probiotic or yogurt can add some healthy bacteria back to the system. It sounds like Moose may have some gastro-intestinal upset. You didn't mention vomiting-- If there's been no vomiting then that is good. However, decreased appetite and the loose stools are concerning. When the colon (large intestine) is inflamed, sometimes they feel like they need to poop even though there isn't anything more coming out. As for what may be causing the GI upset, it could be gastroenteritis which is inflammation of the stomach and or intestines-- this could be from eating something out of the ordinary such as getting into the garbage or eating mulch, etc, or it may be secondary to anything from kidney disease to cancer. I don't see Moose's age listed; if he is older, the concern that there is a more serious underlying problem is higher. If he is a younger dog, gastroenteritis is more likely. Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Luna is unwell. It sounds like she is lethargic, and in some pain or discomfort. It is difficult to pinpoint a diagnosis based on these symptoms alone, but some possibilities include pain from an injury, or abdominal pain such as pancreatitis or a gastrointestinal foreign body. I would definitely recommend getting her seen by a vet within the next 24 hours. They can perform a full physical exam to pinpoint any areas of pain, and may recommend blood work or x-rays to help reach a diagnosis. At minimum, they can offer medication for pain, and constipation if present. In the meantime, I would try offering Luna small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and plain white rice. Also monitor for any vomiting or diarrhea, or any particular areas on her body that seem painful when touched. These will be important pieces of information to provide to the vet when you see them. If he is very lethargic, have him examined by your veterinarian or at the local veterinary ER. If this is not possible, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Serve warm or mix in a teaspoon or two of baby food to stimulate the appetite. Feed until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea and lethargy do not resolve, you will definitely need to see your veterinarian.

Quinn did this this morning. No vomits, no blood, no changes in environment or food. Drinking normally eating normally. What can i give him to help solidify? Cannot afford vets at moment. It looks like his biscuits liquefied.
Diarrhea (and throwing up) can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc. I would put Quinn on bland food for a day or two, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

My dogs stool is a light brown to medium brown, is he okay? It used to be darker and I haven't changed foods, but I do give him more carrots. He also seems to take multiple trips outside to poo, eventually he does go. Could I give him pumpkin to help
Those could be initial signs of a gastrointestinal upset, possibly the first signs of diarrhoea. If the vomiting has stopped and the diarrhea has seemed to improve then you could continue with the bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice is good) and see if she continues to improve. You could also add a probiotic to her diet to see if that helps, too. If her signs do not completely resolve in 24-48 hours or she becomes lethargic then she needs to go to your vet.

Poor Knut! It sounds like he has an upset stomach. There are so many different things that can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can cause them to have an increased urgency to poop so it makes it look like they are straining. I would withhold his food for 12 hours and then feed him a small amount of plain boiled chicken (no bones) and white rice to see if this settles his tummy. If he isn’t improving, refusing to eat, or you see blood at anytime in his poop, I would have our vet look at him. Your vet can do a fecal on him, blood work and even X-rays if needed. Your vet will be able to assess his hydration and give him fluids if needed. Your vet will also be able to start him on the proper meds to help him feel better quicker. I hope this helps!
