My cat is peeing blood and can't pee. Should I give him food or water?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 19 lbs

So, I'm taking my cat to the vet first thing this morning; he's peeing blood, if he can pee at all. My question is: Should I abstain from giving him food and water? Will eating/drinking make his condition worsen?

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that Schrodinger isn't doing well. If you do not think that he is urinating, or only urinating very tiny amounts, there is a good chance that Schrodinger has developed a urethral obstruction. This is a life-threatening condition that can be fatal (even overnight) if left untreated. He needs to go to an emergency vet immediately for evaluation. Food and water are unlikely to significantly impact this issue. I hope that all goes well.
