My dog cried, now limping after playing. Is a vet visit urgent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | spayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs

We have a 10 year old bichon frise, she was chasing our other dog and she suddenly stopped and started crying. She's been limping ever since. She still walks around on it but doesn't cry. Should we take her to a vet ASAP?

I would definitely take Matilda in for an exam with your vet as soon as you are able. If she is limping she is in pain and likely needs pain medication and/or anti-inflammatories. Unfortunately I can't tell what is going on from the pictures alone, but I would be concerned about a broken toe nail, sprain, strain, or even a fracture or dislocation. She is showing you she is in pain with the limping, so I think a visit to your vet is the best course of action. I do not recommend any human pain medication as they can be quite toxic to dogs.
