My dog won't stop crying after intestinal surgery. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | 1 year and 8 months old

My dog has had a sock removed from his intestines this afternoon and we got him back around 5 hours ago. He woke up around 3 hours ago and has not stopped crying loudly. Is this normal after this kind of surgery? Or should we take him to an emergency vet?

This could be a side effect of the anesthesia and/or drugs given to Alfie for the procedure but it could also indicate he is in pain. If you cannot reach the veterinarian that did Alfie's surgery I recommend having him seen by an emergency veterinarian to ensure he is not in pain or is having issues with the drugs leaving his system.
