How to tell if my senior dog with seizures and health issues is suffering?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 11 months old | 17 lbs

I have a 13 year old dog who is blind and has a heart murmur. he has had seizures for several months but has had there within the last week. How do I know if he is suffering? I don't want to consider putting him down yet but I don't want him to suffer. He is still eating and drinking and doesn't';t present like he is in pain.

This is a difficult question to answer, but generally a dog in discomfort will stop eating, become lethargic or may whine/pant excessively even at rest. Since the frequency of the seizures has increased, have Bandit examined by your veterinarian. There are medications that can be given to control them. Begin a Seizure Log. Note the time and duration of each seizure as well as information such as diet and activity before and after. This may help your vet pinpoint causes.
