My senior dog's cough returned. Is over-the-counter medicine safe?

My dog has a cough and it seemed she was getting over it but it has come back just not as severe. Is there an over the counter medicine I can give her. She is 16...still doing all her daily stuff. Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 45 lbs
