Why does my dog purposely bang his head on the shed? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 24 days old | 60 lbs

My dog purposely bangs his head into our outdoor shed. It's not head pressing. Just seems to be purposely banging his head into the shed to the point where the door is dented. Should I be worried or is it just an odd habit?

This does sound like an odd behavior or habit for Dusty to do - I am not sure why he tries to do this, as you mentioned I would be concerned about head pressing or another neurological abnormality, but if he seems completely normal the rest of the time and has no other symptoms, then all I can recommend is preventing him from accessing the shed by using a gate or fence to barricade off the area. Also if he's trying to do this behavior, then distract him away and reward him for coming back to you.
