My 14-year-old cat is sleeping constantly after a limp episode. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 14 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

My cat Jasmine is about 14, assumed spayed female. Last Monday, she was laying in bed with me, started twitching a lot (but minor movements), and then her head drooped down, maybe to sleep. When I saw this, I tried to wake her up, lift her up a bit, and she was limp. 5 seconds later she shook her head like what the heck is going on? Since then, she only sleeps the entire day/night except getting up to walk to the litter box or eat a little wet food once a day, then right back to sleeping.

I'm sorry Jasmine isn't feeling well at the moment! It could be that she was deep in sleep, and it took a minute for her to wake up. That can happen with cats, and while it does appear scary, it can be normal. She is a senior girl, and it can be expected that she will sleep more as she grows older, but having a health check is always a good idea. I'd recommend taking her into the vet tomorrow for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis to see how her body and organs are functioning.
