My dog has a rash on her leg after giving birth. Why won't it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 years old | 48 lbs

A week before my dog gave birth to her pups, she developed a small rash on her left hind leg. I've given her a bath with shampoos that contain aloe vera. It's been about 2 weeks, but it doesn't seem to be clearing up and she still scratches at it. Is there a specific reasoning for the rash and is there a way to cure it?

What cute pups! Its possible there could be a parasite causing some skin irritation. Fleas would be a possibility, but also demodectic mange which is caused by mites that normally live on the skin but can get out of control when dogs are immune suppressed as in pregnancy. It may improve on its own as the pups get bigger but she may need to see a vet for treatment.
