Is my 8-week-old kitten's wet food amount okay with free-fed dry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | spayed | 2 months and 5 days old | 2 lbs

How much wet food should I be feeding my 8 week old kittens? I've been giving them one can of Royal Canin per day (5.8 oz) split between them in two feeding sessions (so 1/4 can per kitten per meal), and have them free feeding on dry food (Canidae) throughout the day. Is this too much, too little, or just right?

Wet food has fewer calories than dry food due to it's higher moisture content, so it does take more of it to give a kitten the correct calorie amount for the day. That being said, because they are free fed dry food throughout the day, they can meet their caloric needs with this, so the amount you are feeding them of wet food is fine :-)
