My dog has separation anxiety after losing a companion. Get new dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 9 years and 8 months old | 55 lbs

I have a 10 year old boxer mix boy that is about to lose his 14 year old adoptive brother. He has never been without a housemate and FREAKS OUT when I leave him home alone to take the older dog to the vet. Unfortunately, the older dog is dying. Should I get another pet? If so, is it okay to get a smaller dog? Does it make a difference if it's a boy or a girl? Is now better than later? HELP!?

I'm so sorry you are facing this situation! How horrible to lose a beloved dog but to also have to worry about Bentley at the same time. Given that he does better with another animal, yes I would get another dog for the home. It's fine to get a smaller dog, and while it doesn't make a difference if you get a boy or a girl, I would make sure the dog is eventually neutered or spayed as soon as it's old enough. It might be a good idea to get one now so the transition for Bentley isn't as difficult when he loses his companion. I hope this helps!
