My dog in heat was with an unfixed male. Could they mate quickly?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 60 lbs

Hi! I left my 10 month old female husky alone with a male chihuahua I just found and rescued tonight. Both are unfixed and my husky is in her first heat cycle! I was gone for maybe a minute when I ran out to my car to get some blankets for him. Could they have mated in such a short time? And if so, how could I tell if they did? Thank you!

Don't worry! If it was no more than a couple of minutes it is very unlikely they would have successfully mated - you would have found them tied when you returned. So, in the meantime you need to be extremely vigilant to make sure the pair are separate at all times - relying on a doggy diaper will not be effective to a determined male! If you can keep them in separate rooms completely that would be best. Once Olive has finished her heat - wait around 1 month and schedule to have her spayed.
