My dog ate a crushed doxycycline capsule. Is it dangerous for her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 10 lbs

My chihuahua, kiara, was prescribed a doxycycline capsule that she should eat it with a small meal. She was eating it with pieces of BBQ and as she ate the capsule, it was crushed and powder got all over her food. She still ate it. I've heard from some people that dogs should only eat capsules without crushing them. Will my dog be ok?

This is unlikely to cause any issue but doxycycline can be quite irritant to the throat and gullet if it stays lodged without food to carry it down to the stomach. It should always be followed by eating a small amount of food or a drink as a precaution against this
