My dog ate prosciutto. Is it dangerous? Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 25 lbs

My 25-pound Labradoodle just ate about a pound of prosciutto. Do you think I should take him to the vet or just wait for it to pass?

The concerning thing about prosciutto is the amount of fat in it, which can cause pancreatitis in dogs. Pancreatitis is a life threatening inflammation of the pancreas, and requires intensive veterinary treatment when an animal is affected by it. I would take Scotty into the vet, especially if he is vomiting, appears lethargic, and/or anorexic.
