My cat has bloody stools, vet is unsure. What could be wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My cat is one year old. He has had bloody stools several times a week since late November. He was initially diagnosed with giardia. We did several rounds of panacur and metronidazole. Our vet said the giardia was probably resolved after several tests came back negative, even though he was still having bloody stools. We have also been on a bland diet, however he still has the bloody stools a few times a week. He has had bloodwork done, been tested for t. feotus. Our vet is not sure what to do!

I'm sorry to hear of your issues with Timon. I'm sure that is very frustrating. Blood in the stool can be seen with parasites, infections, trauma, bleeding disorders or inflammation within the intestinal tract. If he has had bloodwork and fecal tests, it may be time for an ultrasound of his abdomen. An ultrasound will give a better idea of the structure of the intestines and surrounding lymph nodes and may give a better idea if inflammatory bowel disease or another inflammatory condition is possible. Intestinal biopsies may be recommended if thickening of the intestines or other symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease are noted.
