My pug holds his back leg up but shows no pain. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 6 years and 5 months old

Small/toy pug has started holding his left hind leg high in the air (not touching the ground) but with no apparent pain from activity - can still run / jump onto couch. I can see a slightly hardened vein near the ankle of the leg in question but does not react in pain when running hand along entire leg. Doesn't lick/bite it at all from what I've noticed..

Rafiki could have an issue with his kneecap that has caused it to pop out of the normal spot it's in. This is not uncommon in small breed dogs. It can make them prone however to tearing a ligament inside the knee. If this continues or becomes a recurrent problem, meaning it gets better then comes back, I recommend he get checked out by his veterinarian. Do not give any medication at home as it could be very toxic to dogs. You do not need to restrict his activity unless the limping persists for more than a day. In which case you should have him checked out by his veterinarian.
