Are human allergy meds like Claritin, Zyrtec, Singulair safe for dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 65 lbs

What over the counter human medications can I give my dog for allergies other than Benadryl I've given him Benadryl it gives some relief but not full relief so what other over-the-counter allergy medications are safe for him I've been told Claritin and Zyrtec are safe but I was curious about Singulair to because I'm prescribed Singulair for my allergies but I don't know if it's safe for dogs. So what medications are safe to give him

Singulair is not used for dogs, all other over the counter anti histamines you mentioned are usually non effective in dogs at all, Benadryl and Piriton are usually the only ones that sometimes work, but as a general rule anti histamines are not as effective in dogs as they are in humans unfortunately. for severe allergies most dogs will need a course of steroids which are prescription only.
