Is it safe to adopt a second FIV+ cat if I already have one at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed

I have a cat who is FIV+. Because of that, it is recommended to have her be the only cat in the household. However, the city I am is desperately overflowing with cats to adopt. Would it be safe to adopt another cat that is FIV+? (So that way they wouldn't infect each other?)

It would be safe to adopt another FIV+ cat. The risk of transmission of FIV is relatively low between cats that are friendly but the safest route would be to find another positive cat. If you decide to adopt another cat make sure to introduce the cats slowly and ensure you have adequate resources for both cats.
