Why do my Golden Retriever puppies have reddish spots after dewclaw?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | 9 days old

I currently have one week old golden Retriever puppies who have seemed to develop reddish brown spots on their fur in various places slick as the head, back, legs, etc. I thought they had gotten some of moms discharge on them so I gave 4 of the 9 puppies a sponge bath using dawn dish soap. No luck, as the Color is still on their fur. Any ideas on what could be causing this? They had Dew claws done on Monday which was at 5 days old.

What precious puppies! The pictures are helpful, thank you! The reddish-brown discoloration looks suspicious of a stain that comes from a silver nitrate hemostatic stick. Veterinarian's often use these sticks to stop the minor bleeding when performing dewclaw removals. I recommend calling your veterinarian's office to find out if these were used. If so, the stain is harmless and will fade in a week or so. If not, I recommend monitoring the skin at these places closely for hair loss, red skin or scaling skin, this could signs of a rash or skin infection developing. If you think there is a rash present it would be best to have them examined by your veterinarian and then treat appropriately.
