Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Male

Phelps, my dog, has wounds around his genital area. It's sore and infected. It noticed it yesterday and has two open wounds then. Now it has four. We are applying antibiotic on it and bandages but it seems ineffective. His face twitches in pain but he can still walk. Its been weeks. What do we do?

It sounds like your dog may need a stronger prescription medication to treat the problem. Topical medications are often not effective for deep or serious skin lesions. Depending on what the sores look like, additional testing of the skin (cytology) may be required to determine what is going on. I would recommend taking him to see a veterinarian soon, especially because he seems to be in pain.

This looks like an area of severe dermatitis, a deep bacterial skin infection, or potentially some kind of chemical burn. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as possible to have this large wound evaluated. I would guess that it is quite painful, and it seems to be getting worse.
