My dog has tick bites and skin lesions. Is it a tick-borne disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | 4 years old | 23 lbs

I live in Florida but am in Wv for several months. My frenchie came with me and rather than switch his meds to have tick protection I decided to try bathing him once a week in a tick shampoo. The deer ticks however are out in record numbers this year and my lil guy has had at least one adult and half a dozen larve on him. He now has several lesions on him and I'm a lil freaked out. I plan on getting him new medicine as soon as i can but I'm worried he caught something from them.

Hi there. Monitor Hogan for any signs of illness over the next month. Generally, tick-borne diseases cause non-specific signs such as fever, decreased appetite, swollen lymph nodes, and lethargy within the first 4 weeks after a tick bite. Dogs can get a skin infection or irritation from a tick bite - it is hard to tell exactly what they look like without a photo - but if you are concerned have your veterinarian take a look. And if you notice that he is not feeling well, take him to a vet right away. In the future definitely plan to use a veterinarian-approved tick product and check Hogan for ticks every time he comes inside.
