Dog with chicken allergy: tummy issues, won't eat. What food to try?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 44 lbs

We feed Azul Wellness Core Ocean because she is allergic to chicken. Randomly, she wont eat, her tummy will get very noisy and she will run out to eat grass and then I think the grass gives her diarrhea. When she has a solid bowel movement, it is very large. Bigger than my great pyrs poop and she is a 40 lb Australian shep. Could the food be the problem and what other food can I give her? It has protein 34%, Fat 15%, Fiber 7%, Moisture 10%. The vet has checked for parasites and bacteriaThank you

It is certainly possible that the food is the problem. I couldn't say what it is about that brand that is problematic, but some dogs simply do better with certain brands than others. If she has a chicken allergy, I would make sure that whatever brand of food you choose you check extremely carefully for ingredients, and may go as far as calling up the company. Sometimes they can sneak something like "poultry by product" in at the very end of the ingredient list and it is very easy to miss. There are also prescription diets available that are very low ingredient and generally safer for pets with dietary issues. Other issues that can cause gastrointestinal issues in dogs would include inflammatory or infectious diseases, immune-mediated diseases (such as IBD), certain cancers, liver disease, and a few other less common possibilities. If she hasn't already, it might be a good idea to obtain some blood work just to see if everything is checking out OK. Ultrasound and abdominal radiographs are also possibilities if you want to explore the problem in more detail.

If Azul has food allergies it may be worth trying a diet specifically formulated for food allergies. Either a novel protein diet such as hills D/d or Royal canin novel protein diets or a hydrolyzed diet. That's diets are strictly regulated and don't change between batches where otc foods may slightly change thier formulation based on available ingredients. I would also consider adding a probiotic such as forti-flora to her diet as this may help regulate her digestion. Once on food allergy diet she should not eat any other food for 30 days to give it a chance to fully work and evaluate if it is helping her. Good luck. I hope this helps.
