My cat's hernia surgery: What's recovery, pain, and travel like?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Egyptian Mau | Female | spayed

hi - my cat has been diagnosed with traumatic diaphragmatic hernia. Our vet has mentioned that there is a 50/50 chance that she will make it through surgery. Can you tell me whats the length of post op care? Would she lead a healthy, normal life if she survives? How long will she likely be in pain? I'm relocating, When would she be able to travel?

I'm sorry to hear of Hazel's injury. Most animals will recover from a surgery such as this within two weeks provided there are no other major injuries such as a fracture. As long as there are no complications with surgery Hazel could be expected to live a normal healthy life. Your veterinarian will likely prescribe pain medications after surgery to minimize the pain she is in. I would expect her to be pain-free within two weeks. I would discuss your travel plans with your veterinarian but Hazel should be able to travel after the recovery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
