My dog has a mast cell tumor. How invasive is lymph node surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 35 lbs

My 8 year old beagle was diagnosed with a grade2 low grade MCT on his left paw. It has been removed and there is mass cells in his lymph node which the vet wants to remove and test. How invasive will this surgery be for him, there is no other signs of cancer in his organs

Surgery to remove a peripheral lymph node is not any more invasive than the surgery to remove a mast cell tumor on the skin. I'm assuming this lymph node is one that is near his shoulder or behind his knee. This could provide valuable information, because additional treatment would be recommended if cancerous mast cells are confirmed in the lymph node even though the initial biopsy came back as a low grade tumor that is less likely to spread. You can always ask your vet about the potential complications of surgery.
