My dog has a dry hole on his head. Does he need to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 11 months and 20 days old

I have recently found something unusual on my dog's head. Something that looks like a little dry hole. I have looked it up on the internet and have only found articles about Cuterebra Infestations. However, the hole on my dog's head does not look like there is anything in it, its not inflamed, neither does it seem to bother him. Could you please let me know if it is a good idea to take him to the vet because of it? I have attached a couple of pictures.

This could be a scab from a bug bite or Archie rubbing his head against something. You could monitor it for any swelling, redness, pain or discharge. It should heal on its own but if you see any of those changes then Archie needs to get examined by his veterinarian.

This doesn't appear to be severely swollen enough to house a cuterebra; however the picture can only tell so much detail of this area. However if a scab was originally there then chances are this is just an old puncture wound that is trying to heal. I wouldn't put any ointment on this, just make sure the area stays clean. Topical Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water can be used to antiseptically clean the area as needed. Keep an eye on it for the next few days as most wounds take 7-10 days total or heal. If it starts draining, starts smelling, appears swollen, or bothers Archie then it's best to get it looked at by your local vet at that time. Otherwise this may just be on its way to healing completely now that the scab is gone. I hope everything works out well for your pet Archie. Take care.
