Why does my dog bury her food and bones using toys and her bed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 10 months old | 5 lbs

Why does my dog try and bury her food? Its certain things like bones & her favorite food? She takes whatever is nearby like toys and even her bed and tries to cover her stuff with them...does she not like it or could it be she is trying to save it for later? She confuses me sometimes because i can't tell wether she likes it or not is it normal behavior?

Some dogs always do this and some do it because they don't want it or they have some anxiety. Does she eventually eat it? If so then she likely just saving it for later. Does she only do it when it is storming or other times when she is anxious? If so this is likely anxiety. Does she never go back to eat it and she won't eat it out of her bowl either, then she may not like that food and is wanting something different. I hope this helps!
