Why is my cat scooting his butt on the carpet and furniture?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

Hi! I've noticed that my cat has been scooting his butt on surfaces like the couch and my bed lately. I was wondering what could be some of the causes of this? He's a 4 year old male who weighs around 13 lbs.

These signs are usually related to anal glands infection/inflammation. Anal glands need to be expressed and, if infected, treated with antibiotics. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

Usually they are trying to express their anal glands (scent glands that live just inside the rectum). If it is just occasionally then I wouldn’t be too worried, however if he is licking his rear end a lot, or the rubbing is frequent, or if you happen to see any blood then he should be seen by a veterinarian. Very occasionally anal sacs become infected or impacted in cats, but it is uncommon. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
