My dog has hip dysplasia. Can he recover or will he need meds forever?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered

Hi my German shepherd has just recently begun showing signs of hip displasia, such as painful squeaks as he jumps or climbs the stairs. He is about 3 years old and I was wondering if he could be treated to the point that he would heal back to his old self again. Also if that isn't possible would he have to be kept on pain killers the rest of his life. He hasn't been active lately as he would just sit in the backyard fue to be not being she to run him everyday. Thanks

It's possible he will need pain killers for the rest of his life indeed and those pain killers could give him an excellent quality of life, he could go back to normal as long as he is on them. i would recommend taking him to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked.
