Dog licking anus, bloody stool, not eating. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 14 years and 6 months old | 40 lbs

15 year old male 40 lb dog. Been licking at his anus. Yesterday would not eat. Then later in the pm had large amount of normal stool. Today onky ate 1/2 meal. Bloody soft stool. Dripping red blood drops when trying to deficate. Cleaned with warm washcloth, put on e-collar. Not acting sick. My guess infected anal glands? Gave metronidazole. Advice? Bland diet? Warm compresses? Vet?

I'm sorry to hear Colonial Rhett is having trouble. He could have an anal gland abscess, colitis, intestinal parasites, or even a tumor causing him to bleed from his rectum. A warm compress and bland diet will not hurt, but I would take him in to your vet to have him examined. If he has an anal gland abscess, he likely needs the area flushed and treated with an antibiotic and pain medication. If he has colitis, he may need a diet change and different antibiotics. Your vet will be able to determine the best course of treatment after checking out the area and possibly doing a fecal test on him.
