Child allergic to dogs? Can I keep my Chihuahua with allergies?

Where does the chihuahua fall in the Allergy category? My 2yr old scored an 8 for dogs and 35 for cats. I have a chihuahua and my pediatrician said she had to go! I'm not so quick to give up my first baby but I want to make sure I'm not hurting my boy. Help! Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

Chihuahuas do shed like other dogs, however there are a few things you can do to help reduce allergens to your child. Brushing Silly daily in a room that the hair can easily be swept up can help reduce shedding and release of dander. Using a pet wipe or baby wipe when Silly comes in from outside can also help reduce allergens such as pollen and dander stuck to her fur and keep them from spreading. Using an in-home purifier and allergy meds with your child may also help reduce reactions to any fur or dander in the house.
