Why is my cat's skin hard at the vaccine injection site a week later?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 months and 15 days old | 9 lbs

My cat had his vaccinations and about a week later there was a hard spot at the injection site. Not under the skin. It was as if the skin hardened. My friend who is a cat tech looked at it and pulled it off. It looked like hide like the underside of a fur rug. We assumed it was some sort of skin reaction to the injection or the needle itself.

Hi, sorry to hear Keanu is having problem. This very well could be a type of vaccine reaction. I would monitor the site to see if it gets better or if a lump appears. If a lump appears, he should be taken back to the vet as this is serious. It could be an infection also, which may resolve on it's own or may need antibiotics. I hope he gets better!
