My outdoor cat had kittens. How can I tell if she's caring for them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 1 year and 1 month old | 8 lbs

My outside cat had kittens on Sunday. This is her first pregnancy and she is a young cat. I am not sure where she had them or where they are. She has been acting the same way she did prior to pregnancy. Are there signs that I should look for as to whether she is taking care of them or not? She still comes running as soon as I come out the door and I wasn't sure if that means she isn't spending time with them.

Cats can be incredibly secretive about their kittens. When she comes to you you could have a look at her tests to see if the surrounding four is wet from suckling. They are probably near by and she comes over to see you.
