Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 7 years and 6 months old | 60 lbs
Hey I have a 7 yr old spayed female golden retriever. She usually just gets hot spots. But now its different she has a lot of skin issues. When I shaved down her coat that's when I noticed a lot of skin problems. She licks and chews especially on her lower stomach area and genital area. I know she has grain allergies but I know its more than that. Can you give me any indication what it may be?

Heidi could have a contact allergy given that this is mostly on her underside. She may also have a skin infection or yeast infection that is causing itching as well. Sometimes a medicated pet shampoo or an oatmeal-based pet shampoo is helpful. However if you do the bathing route and it does not clear up within a couple days she should be evaluated by her veterinarian. This is because with her age a low thyroid gland activity could cause the skin lesions to appear. If that is the case then giving her a daily thyroid supplement would help.
