My dog has Lyme, but no symptoms. Why a urine test for kidneys?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 45 lbs

A blood test on our shows he has been bitten by a tic with lyme disease. He has no evidence of the disease but the vet wants to do a urine test which indicates whether his kidneys have been affected. Is this widely recommended?

Yes, urine protein:creatinine ratios are commonly performed to determine if there is any protein loss as a result of underlying Lyme disease. In asymptomatic dogs, antibody levels against Lyme disease (C6 quant) are also useful. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Jack!
