My 6-month German Shepherd has hip/elbow dysplasia. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | 6 months and 5 days old | 60 lbs

Hello, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place on regards to my German Shepherd dog. He is only 6 months old but has both hip and elbow dysplasia. What would you recommend I do? I've spoken to my vet but I would like a second opinion. Thank you for your time and anything to help me and my dog would be appreciated immensely.

I would consider at his age a referral to a veterinary surgeon to discuss any surgical options particularly for his hips. This might delay the onset of arthritis in the future. Depending on what's causing his elbow dysplasia surgery may be an option there as well. You could also get the advice of a surgeon as to which is more likely to cause issues the elbows are the hips. I would also recommend starting him on a joint supplement now and potentially omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. All supplements and physical therapy are great surgery might be your best bet at long-term comfort.
