Why is my senior dog biting her leg? Her skin is red and losing hair.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 14 years old | 55 lbs

My 13 year old black lab Keira has started nibbling and biting her back leg thought it was harvest mites so treated her with medacated shampoo and used mite treatment but over the past few days it's got worse she's removed all the hair and it's red and seems to be very irritating for her and suggestion on another treatment. My other 3 dogs were doing Tyrone same but treatment has worked for them

Keira may have an infection in the area of her skin where she is having such severe hair loss. I would recommend taking her in to see your vet since the medication you tried at home did not work. Keira also is an older dog and her immune system may not be as strong as your other dogs so she may need additional medication to help her over come this illness.
