Why is my dog's penis and abdomen swollen? Is it an insect bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 5 months old

My small dog has a line of swollen tissue along the top of the penis (foreskin?) and the skin of the abdomen just above. It happened after we walked through an alley - he began living himself immediately after - so I think it might be an insect bite, but I want to be sure it's not something more serious.

It looks like the area may be a bit infected in addition to swelling. It would be best to have it looked at by a local veterinarian so that the area can be cleaned up and any antibiotics given as needed to help Mr. Odin feel better.

This looks like a skin infection or abscess. The original wound could be due to an insect bite, a scratch or even from Mr. Odin licking himself. However, the wound now appears to have a bacterial infection that beed to be treated with antibiotics. Your veterinarian will be able to clean the wound and prescribe topical and/or oral antibiotics.
