Does my dog need heartworm prevention before traveling overseas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 11 months old

Hi, my Mini Schnauzer will be traveling to Bulgaria next month. Unfortuunately, the number of dogs diagnosed with Dirofilariasis is rising recently. Do I need to give her any preventive drug and will it have effect if given only once?

Have her tested for heartworm before you travel and start her on a preventative if her test comes back negative. It should be given monthly if you will be overseas for an extended period of time. Options include HeartGard, Revolution, Trifexis and Advocate topical.
