My elderly cat won't eat or drink and is losing weight. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 24 years and 5 months old | 6 lbs

My cat, Ebony, is 24 years old. He's been active and healthy until 1 week ago. He's lost his apatite; he does NOT drink water like he has in past....he's lost a great amount of weight in the last 2 weeks. I don't want to euthanize him unless it is necessary. Please advise. Should I give him a supplement? Enfamil? Baby food ?

It's very impressive for a cat to live to be 24 years old! You have obviously been taking great care of Ebony. Since it sounds like these symptoms (not eating or drinking much, weight loss, etc.), it's very likely that he has an illness of some kind causing these problems. If this is the case, a supplement will not be helpful - the underlying problem needs to be diagnosed to see what can be done to treat it. I would recommend taking Ebony to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do some diagnostic testing to help determine what's wrong. Depending on what is found, the vet can discuss treatment options or medication that may help to make him feel better, improve his appetite, etc.
