10-week-old Saint Bernard puppies sick with diarrhea. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 12 days old | 12 lbs

I have 2 10 week old saint bernard pups. One tested + last week and has been on meds for 5 days. The other started showing signs last night. Hoping to have the money for the vet tomorrow. Both have pink gums and I am giving pedialyte every 30 mins to an hour. No funky smell to their poo even though it is diarrhea. Neither of them are vomiting on a regular basis. The one that hasn't seen the vet has been given carafate every 6 hrs to coat tummy. Gave raw egg today. Any other suggestions?

Chancho and Messi are adorable and I'm sorry to hear that they haven't been feeling well. I'm assuming that one puppy tested positive for parvovirus and was treated with medication on an outpatient basis. Parvovirus is not a virus with a definitive cure, but rather requires ongoing supportive care for fluid loss, anti-nausea medication, antibiotics, etc. I'm glad that neither puppy is having severe vomiting. You are doing the right thing by offering Pedialyte frequently to help with their hydration and electrolyte losses. If the puppies are willing and able to eat, you can offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for the next few days, but there are no other home remedies available. Avoid raw egg, as this could worsen any vomiting and diarrhea. As soon as possible, take the other puppy to the vet too because he also likely needs antibiotics and anti-nausea medications at minimum, but his vet will likely recommend hospitalization for IV medications. I hope this helps and that both Chancho and Messi feel better soon!
