My old cat has a red, crusty eye and puffy cheek. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

My 18 year old cats eye is red and crusty and her cheek is very puffy. She is so old that I think a trip to the vet would be so stressful that it would be more harm than help. Is there anything I can get or do for her at home?

Poor Indigo! That looks very uncomfortable! Unfortunately I don't think there is anything you can do for Indigo at home. If you are worried about her getting stressed out then see if your vet or local pet store has a product called Feliway-you want the little spray bottle. This is a feel good hormone that can be sprayed on a rag or blanket and put in Indigo's kennel before, during and after her vet visit to help her relax. Some possible causes of Indigo's swelling and discomfort include and infected tooth, an abscess on her face, or a mass/cancerous process. Your vet will do a thorough examination and help you determine the nature of the issue. The vet may also recommend some diagnostics such as X-rays or bloodwork before designing a treatment plan for Indigo. I hope she feels better soon!
