My dog licked his neuter stitches open and it's swollen. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 7.8 lbs

I recently got my dog neutered and I think he licked and dissolved one of his stitches. It isn't bleeding or bothering him but it's a little open and swollen. Is this okay or should I seek a vet?

That was naughty of Rufus to lick his stitches! Yes, I would definitely have him seen by a vet for this as the swelling can indicate infection, and the open part can introduce further infection into the incision or prevent proper healing. He may need an addition suture to close the incision, which the vet can place.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. The incision appears to still be intact. However, it will open up or become infected if he continues to lick it. You will need to place an E-collar on him tonight to prevent any further self trauma. I hope this information helps!

Oh no! Poor Drax! If the incision is opened Drax will need to be seen by a veterinarian to see if the area needs to be sutured again. I suggest getting him to a veterinarian immediately as he will be at risk for infection or if the incision is open very wide further damage to the area. Use an e-collar to prevent him from licking the area right away to reduce the chances of further aggravating the wound. You will want to continue using the e-collar until it is totally healed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Drax heals quickly!
